Briefing Notes and Special Reports

Aside from working papers and seminars the RLP produces a range of publications for multiple purposes. The research is targeted at a range of audiences (eg academia, government officials or the public) and aims to produce information quickly on time-sensitive issues. These result in special reports compiled either through individual consultancies or for external publications, including briefing notes that represent immediate but preliminary observations from the field, letters sent to the national newspapers or advocacy briefs that attempt to bring attention to specific thematic areas.

The Mental Health of Refugees in Prison, a case-study from Western Uganda

This study looked at the mental wellbeing of refugees in prisons located in Western Uganda. It highlights the importance of understanding of refugee inmates' mental wellbeing so as to provide them with adequate and prompt services. The study was conducted in prisons in the western districts of Uganda namely of Masindi, Hoima, Kyegegwa, Fort Portal, Mbarara and Isingiro.

Courts can never solve problems in the community!

This research provides information on informal structures within refugee communities, the processes they follow and nature of cases they handle. It highlights the benefits and challenges that refugees encounter when using these systems and provides recommendations. This study will guide relevant stakeholders on critical areas for intervention. The study understands informal justice systems to include persons or bodies that are involved in resolving disputes but are not part of the judiciary as established by law, and that the procedures or structures of these persons or bodies are not based on any statutory law.

Psychosocial Challenges among Refugee Women and Girls in Nakivale Refugee Settlement

This report is output of a research study conducted in Nakivale refugee settlement with funding support from Finnish Refugee Council. It highlights the challenges that are still holding back refugee women and girls, especially those living in refugee settlements, from realizing and enjoying their rights to health, social, economic, psychological and cultural well-being.

Forgiveness: Unveiling an Asset for Peacebuilding

The report, an outcome of a new study conducted in five districts of Uganda ie Luwero, Gulu, Amuria, Kasese and Yumbe, between January 2014 –April 2015 found that forgiveness if practiced in combination with other measures of justice like judicial accountability, truth telling, governance and reparations, carries great potential for building peace.
